The most Earth-shattering event in Brazil this weekend took place in New York, where singer Ivete Sangalo played a sold out show at Madison Square Garden. Too bad, few Americans even noticed.

A superstar in her native Brazil, where she can pack a 70,000-capacity soccer stadium and commands crowds of millions during Carnaval, Sangalo kept the almost-entirely-Brazilian audience on its feet over the course of three hours and five costume changes.

Dancing frenetically, the crowd of 14,500 sang along with every word of her samba-inflected dance pop songs like "Festa" (Party) and "Acelere" (Accelerate).

"I just want you to be proud of me, and I want you to be proud of the show I brought here," Sangalo said from the top of a massive, thrusting stage pulsing with lights and video — designed by the man responsible for this year's Super Bowl halftime show, Bruce Rodgers.

In Brazil, Sangalo's show was touted as her first step toward conquering the U.S., placing her in a pantheon with the likes of Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Beyonce and U2.

Entertainment mogul Simon Fuller, creator of the British show "Pop Idol" that was the template for the U.S. series he produces, called DioGuardi a standout songwriter whom he planned to work with in music "for many years to come."

DioGuardi, whose exit had been rumored, is a hit machine whose songs have been recorded by Gwen Stefani, Faith Hill, Marc Anthony and others, including past "Idol" winners.

Paris Hilton may owe investors in her 2006 movie "Pledge This!" about $160,000 for failing to do enough promotion. U.S. District Judge Federico Moreno in Miami ruled Thursday that the 29-year-old celebrity socialite didn't live up to her contract when refusing interviews with publications in Russia and the United Kingdom.
Hilton's spokeswoman had no immediate comment.

Moreno preliminarily valued those lost opportunities at $160,000. But the judge wants more information about Hilton's contract before finalizing the amount. The investors initially wanted $8.3 million.
The judge's decision follows Hilton's arrest last weekend in Las Vegas on cocaine possession charges. Hilton told police the small amount of cocaine was not hers.

Nobody ever said Hollywood relationships were easy, and the on-again off-again affair of Justin Long and Drew Barrymore certainly proves that out. Are they still on? Are they off? This Friday, as the pair's romantic comedy "Going the Distance" debuts in theaters, it looks as if they are on, although one never truly knows.

But if there is something Long is certain about, he told Reuters earlier this month, he has reclaimed his love of acting -- his "mojo," as he put it. Long, 32, worked on television as a teenager and broke into movies in geeky roles in comedies such as 2004's "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.

Michael Douglas Hopes To Beat Intense Cancer: Michael Douglas said on Tuesday he felt optimistic about recovering from throat cancer but drew gasps when he told a television audience he had the most advanced stage. The 65-year-old "Wall Street" actor told TV talk-show host David Letterman that a biopsy indicated that his cancer was at stage IV, which he described as "intense, and so they've got to go at it ..."

Letterman asked whether stage IV was a good diagnosis. "Um no," Douglas replied, according to a transcript provided by CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman."Stage IV cancer has spread far beyond the original tumor and is usually impossible to cure. "No, you like to be down at stage I ... but it has not -- the big thing you're always worried about is it spreading ... and the expectations are good ...

"The percentages are very good," Douglas added. "I would hate to say, but right now, it looks like it should be 80 percent, and with certain hospitals and everything, it does improve.
